Life Skills Program

HSE's "Life Skills Program" (LSP), which is operated by HSE Pastoral takes "Green" to the mining industry people and gives them an opportunity to become an equipment operator in the Mining Industry of Australia.

LSP: An Introduction

HSE has interests in the mining and pastoral sectors. We've got more than 650 employees across projects in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.  The introduction of our Life Skills program is a step that will help to minimise the effect of the skills shortage on our rapidly expanding business.  HSE's Life Skills program was introduced in August 2010, and since then it has provided many people with a pathway into the mining industry. The program allows inexperienced people to learn skills necessary for becoming heavy machinery operators, away from the stresses of a high-pressure production environment.  The life skills program is completely unique.  It links our mining and pastoral divisions to provide a training program that will ensure a sustainable resource of personnel, who have the skills and attitude to help position us company as an industry leader.

LSP: A Day on the Station

For many the four week journey has opened doors and provided opportunities that they'd previously thought were out of their reach.  Some of the trainees we've had passing through here are really inspiring.   Many go from being timid and lacking in self-confidence, to someone who understands their potential and is ready to go out and make their mark on the world.  The course provides them with valuable skills that they will use throughout their lives. Having the trainees here for four weeks means we can gauge their full potential, not only working but also in a social environment, and this helps us to identify potential leaders.

LSP:  Transitioning to Site

While completion of the Life Skills Program doesn't come with a guarantee of a job with HSE Mining, it's certainly a good start. Trainees are assessed by the manager and supervisor at the end of the course and evaluated against a number of criteria ranging from attendance and attitude to ability and performance. We won't consider a person for a trainee operator role unless they successfully pass the evaluation process. It’s a tough training program but people really learn from the experience, gives them confidence and skills that will be used throughout their lives.    From the operator's cab of a Rear Dump Truck in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Queensland's mining boom, the tranquility of Limbunya Station seems a million miles away.  But for an increasing number of trainees entering this growing industry, Limbunya Station was where it all started.
